Mother's Day Feature | Celebrating Mamas In Business

In celebration of this years Mother's Day we got the incredible opportunity to hear from four boss mamas who took the leap and are now flourishing in the world of small business. Today they are sharing the goods with us about how they balance it all (or how they don't!).

GOLDEN AUGUST (@goldenaugustco) - Adrianna & Alysha

When did you launch your business?

We launched our business in January of 2018! 3.5 years ago! Originally working under the name Eucalyptus Pop Up. We eventually rebranded the summer of 2020 to Golden August. We felt a shift in where we saw our business heading and a name change felt needed to pursue these new ideas and continue growing.

What sparked the idea for your business or what was the motivating factor behind starting?

Funny enough it was never something we planned on purpose. Through our love of home decor we noticed that it was hard to find certain florals in bulk locally, particularly Eucalyptus.  so we began selling Eucalyptus in bulk to those also trying to fill their home and space or weddings with that gorgeous green stuff. As time went on we started carrying more floral options. Slowly drifting away from fresh florals and into dried pampas and dried florals. Which is where we are today! We both love creating and I think that’s where we get our motivation from. Seeing what new ideas we can come up with , which actually sparked our recent clothing line Golden August The Label ( @goldenaugust_thelabel )

How do you balance work & motherhood?

Oh man, it changes daily! Some days we feel we are totally killing it balancing both work and motherhood and then the next day, it’s a total mess haha. Bringing our kids along on our work days has been a fun way of showing them what we do, giving them small “jobs” to keep them included and  it’s also introducing them to new people and environments. Our kids have been joining us on our trips to our suppliers since they were babies! They have friendships with a few of them and it’s really cute!

If you could give one piece of advice to other mama’s in business what would it be?

It can be hard and overwhelming to wear the hat of both mom and business owner all at the same time.  Recognizing that some days you will be able to push through and get all work and mom “things” done but then there will be days that won’t go our way, no matter how hard we try! It’s okay to step away from the work hat for a moment to recharge, tomorrow is always a new day!

When did you launch your business?

My business launched on April 14th last year.

What sparked the idea for your business or what was the motivating factor behind starting?

I am a mama to twins that are 3 yrs old and a one year old baby boy. Starting a business with three kids under three in the middle of a pandemic - call me crazy but I knew I was meant for something bigger. I took an amazing opportunity that allowed me to stay at home with my babies while making an income. Helping others look beautiful is nice, but helping them believe they are beautiful is life changing. And being able to use my platform to help end the stigma of mental illness is also such a passion of mine.

How do you balance work & motherhood?

Balancing work and motherhood can be difficult at times with mine and my husband's situation not having any support. However, I knew I wanted to provide the best life I could for my littles so I sacrifice sleep from time to time. I love that I can make my own schedule and work around my kids schedules.

If you could give one piece of advice to other mama’s in business what would it be?

Business mamas. I am here to tell you that if this is your dream - dream big. Manifest and take the steps to make those dreams come true. It's worth it.

LITTLE PINE COMPANY (@jotiwall) - Joti Wall

When did you launch your business?

2018

What sparked the idea for your business or what was the motivating factor behind starting?

I slowly entered the world of fibre art in 2017 when I was working as Executive Director of a non-profit. I needed a creative outlet, something that doubled as a form of therapy, and it soon became the perfect side gig for me. I started off by just gifting some stitched work  to friends and family, but soon after was hit with a tonne of interest for commissioned pieces and that’s when things took off! After my maternity leave with my first born (2018) I made the decision to pursue this full-time.

How do you balance work and motherhood?

This is a constant struggle for me, one that I’m slowly learning to manage. Being a mom of two little ones while working from home is one thing - but this past year has brought on a whole new set of challenges. It’s like having a full-time job but not having the full-time hours. Childcare (even if just once or twice a week) has been a game changer and has allowed me to actually carve out “work days” so I’m not burning the midnight oil all week long. I spent a lot of time running my business during the little pockets of time life presented (mainly naps and post bedtime), but it’s just not enough. Anytime I feel overwhelmed I take a step back, postpone my next launch, and set more realistic goals. Being a present mom is my biggest priority!

If you could give one piece of advice to other mama’s in business what would it be?

Just go for it. I wasted so much time doubting myself and thinking that I wasn’t good enough. Taking that first leap to build your brand is often the most difficult - but you’ll never know what’s on the other side unless you go for it!

DIGITAL CREATOR & JEWELRY MAKER (@_raisingriver) - Jocelyn Forgerson

When did you launch your business?

I launched my business in the Spring of 2019 at about 6 months postpartum.

What sparked the idea for your business or what was the motivating factor behind starting?

My motivation for starting my business came from feeling like I needed something for myself. I felt so lost postpartum and wanted something to help me feel like myself again. My husband had worked with ceramics for years and I thought learning polymer would be a great medium for us to bond over.

How do you balance work & motherhood?

I barely do! I start work at 9pm when the girls are down and work till about midnight. But it's the best way for me to decompress and put on a good record while I'm at it.

If you could give one piece of advice to other mama's in business what would it be?

My number on advice would be to invest in your business. You'll see the return come back tenfold.
